Bioenergetics One-Year Workshop Series:
Introduction to Relational Somatic Psychology

  • Looking for self-growth and a deeper understanding of the connection between your mind, body, and emotions?

  • Searching for an increased sense of aliveness and wellbeing in your life?

  • Ready to open yourself to greater pleasure and connectedness in your relationships?

Bioenergetics One-Year Workshop Series:

Introduction to Relational Somatic Psychology is a series of eight one-day workshops that teach about Bioenergetics and stimulate self-growth.

Bioenergetics is truly cutting edge therapy as it incorporates the process within the body AND the mind, and offers a theoretical basis for integrating both.

This workshop series helps you learn more about how your own personal development has been impacted by your experiences growing up. You will also learn the good news that development is an on-going process, and that with Bioenergetics you can become more grounded, more aware of your body sensations, more open to pleasure, and more available for heart-felt connections with others.

We're more than an institute;
we're a community!

Each training day includes Bioenergetic exercises, discussion of theory, experiential learning, and group process.

Join us for personal growth and connection! CEUs are available for MFTs and LCSWs.

Location: 333 Olive Street
San Diego, CA 92103

Tuition: $100 per class, for a total of $800 for the series

Certification Program

Certification Program:
Bioenergetics is a specialization in relational, affective, somatic psychotherapy taught as a comprehensive post-graduate study program for psychiatrists, psychotherapists, social workers, psychiatric nurses, and other health professionals. Using a primarily experiential format, this program integrates psychodynamic psychotherapy with a relational body perspective.

Certification Program

SDIBA follows the curriculum set by the International Institute for Bioenergetic Analysis (IIBA). This four year curriculum consists of nine weekend trainings per year, yearly attendance at the four day annual Southern California Bioenergetic Conference, individual psychotherapy with a Certified Bioenergetic therapist, and supervision leading to certification.

The first two years of training focus on basic Bioenergetic theory,
concepts of biological energy functions, the formation of character
structure, and Bioenergetic techniques. The third and fourth year of
training focus on the therapeutic process with emphasis on
transference, counter-transference, and integrating Bioenergetic
techniques with the theory of character analysis. Training fees are
$275 per weekend, which are subject to change if
necessary. Costs for the conference will be billed by the conference
committee in two installments. Annual student dues for IIBA
are $78, and SDIBA dues are $135.

The program teaches students:

  • How the body both records the dynamic process which underlies personality and maintains one's way of being in the world.

  • How traumatic, relational and childhood experiences and conflicts can lead to formation of inflexible and restrictive patterns of relating to self and others and how these patterns are reflected in the form and motility of the body.

  • How to distinguish between shock trauma and developmental trauma and the treatment implications thereof.

  • How to facilitate a therapeutically empathic relationship with a client that supports learning new patterns of relating and being in the world.

  • How to use various physical and cognitive interventions that encourage the client to alter and expand his/her relationship patterns.

  • How to deepen their awareness of their relational patterns and how these patterns affect interactions with clients.

  • How to expand and maintain authentic contact with self and other.

  • How to work with transference and counter transference on the body level.

A prerequisite for acceptance into the training is a graduate degree
that leads to a license to practice psychotherapy or, enrollment in a
course of study toward that end. Before continuation into the third
year, trainees must be a registered intern or licensed to practice
psychotherapy and able to work Bioenergetically with clients. In
addition, clinical supervision is required during the course of the
professional program and may begin as early as the second year.
Furthermore, training applicants are required to have 25 hours of
individual Bioenergetic therapy experience prior to enrollment in the
program. For a list of Certified Bioenergetic Therapist (CBT) see the link for certified therapists.

Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE): USING THE BODY TO HEAL
Dr. David Berceli Workshop
(This workshop is open to the public)

Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE) is a breakthrough in trauma recovery and stress management. It is a body-centered method of recovery that helps release the deep chronic tension created in a body during a traumatic or stressful experience. It is easily learned, immediately effective and self-empowering. This method has been used successfully in over 10 different countries with families, organizations, and schools in diverse populations and cultures.

David Berceli, Ph.D., a Bioenergetic therapist and creator of Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE), presented his two-day workshop in April, 2008 which addressed trauma and introduced TRE to the San Diego community. This workshop was co-sponsored by the San Diego Institute for Bioenergetic Analysis and Living Ubuntu. Among the many enthusiastic testimonials were:

“Excellent—the education of the trauma process and exercises have already added value to my life.”

“Just what I needed to experience to move toward integration.”

“It was a wonderful participatory, eventful experience.”

“It was very rich—deep, thorough, beautifully and compassionately presented with grace and humor.”

Recovering the Root of our Beginning: Embodying our Love
Presenters: Robert M. Hilton, Ph.D. and Virginia Wink Hilton, Ph.D.
(This is open to members of the bioenergetic community only)

According to Winnicott a baby that has been left too long and therefore traumatized “has to start again permanently deprived of the root which could provide continuity with the personal beginning.” This workshop will explore the nature of this kind of deprivation and demonstrate how this root of beginning can be recovered in the therapeutic relationship through the embodiment of love.

Goals:

  • Understand the nature of deprivation.

  • Understand the defense system that begins as a result of this
    deprivation.

  • Understand how to address this deprivation and defense system in the therapeutic relationship.

  • Understand the somatic aspects of recovering the root of our beginning.

  • Experience how this process applies to our own lives.

  • Experience how to relate this recovery process to our clients.

Robert M. Hilton, Ph.D.

Virginia Wink Hilton, Ph.D.
